Hold on tight and crank up the thriller tunes—this wasn’t just any fall getaway. We packed up the snacks. We summoned our bravest crew. Then, we hit the road for a 10-day Halloween adventure through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. Along the way, we visited more than 25 eerie landmarks. We tackled haunted houses. We played spooky disc golf. We slept under starry skies in cabins and RVs.
This wasn’t just a trip. It was a full-on haunted experience. There were historical chills, family thrills, and a brain-teasing escape room. Let’s go!
Day 1–2: Chocolate & Chills in Hershey, Pennsylvania
We landed in Pennsylvania, scooped up our rental car, and rolled into Maryland to link up with the fam. But day two? That’s when the magic hit.
Hershey’s Chocolate World
Grandma led the pack like a candy crusader. We rode every ride. We even created our own chocolate bars (fancy wrappers and all). It was like stepping into Willy Wonka’s sweetest dream.
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Did you know Milton Hershey supplied free chocolate to soldiers during WWII? Legend says the “Field Ration D” bar was so bad, the army called it “Hitler’s Secret Weapon.”
Day 3: Disc Golf & Field of Screams, Maryland
We kicked off the day with a round of disc golf at Emmitsburg DGC, tree-dodging like ninjas. After lunch and margaritas, we went full Halloween mode—hunting for spooky decor and winding up at a pro haunter’s warehouse.
Then came Field of Screams—four terrifying attractions and a rock band under the stars. Easily one of our top 5 haunted experiences!
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Maryland’s first official haunted house opened in 1964. It was one of the earliest staged haunts in the U.S.!
Day 4: Gettysburg Ghosts & Haunted Forts
Next stop: Gettysburg. We soaked up Civil War history. We munched down at Ernie’s Texas Lunch. It felt like eating in a time machine. We wandered the battlefield, spotted new plaques, and explored historic downtown shops.
That night, we suited up for a Halloween showdown at Fort Ritchie, an old military base turned ghost town.
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Gettysburg is one of the most haunted battlefields in the U.S. Over 51,000 soldiers died there in just three days.
Day 5: Glorious Green & Guilt-Free Golf
We took a breather. Trey and Amaya focused on her schoolwork. I headed to Codorus Township Park. There, I reunited with disc golf queens I met at USWDGC. Between the cornfields and hills, it was like a fall dreamscape.
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Codorus State Park sits on land that was once roamed by the Susquehannock tribe. They were known for their deep spiritual beliefs tied to the land.
Day 6–7: Virginia Views & Safari Blues
We road-tripped through Virginia and played disc golf at Washington and Lee University, where deer stalked us like haunted mascots. Later, we hit a safari drive-thru… and a zebra broke our window. No joke.
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Washington & Lee is one of Virginia’s oldest colleges. Its oldest buildings are rumored to be haunted. The apparitions are said to be students and soldiers from the 1800s.
Day 8–9: Waterfalls, Ghosts & Glamping in NC
We trekked to Jellystone Park in NC, detouring to Nature Bridge for a hike to Jefferson’s waterfall. The vibes? Straight out of a fairytale. That night: Halloween Olympics at the RV site—we won Best Decor AND a raffle Yogi Bear.
On day 9, we played disc golf at South Mountain Christian Camp. We also went to Lake Hickory Haunts, which has 13 scare zones!
🎃 Halloween History Hit: Thomas Jefferson really did “claim” part of Nature Bridge in 1774. He called it “the most sublime of Nature’s works.”
Day 10: Trick-or-Treat & The Final Fright
We wrapped it up with a mountain coaster, laser tag, trick-or-treat parade, and one final haunted house. Homemade, heart-thumping, and unforgettable.
Day 11: The Long Ride Home
As we buckled up for the journey back, we knew one thing for sure—this haunted road trip wasn’t just spooky. It was epic.
